"Brighten The Corner Where You Are"
Artist Leslie Hanlon

Light A Candle
25 artists

NON-PROFIT BENEFICIARIES: FIRST BOOK (Philadelphia), MARIPOSA AZUL (Costa Rica),
MERCY CORPS (International), PHILABUNDANCE (Philadelphia), TREES FOR LIFE (Scotland)

Inspired by the Chinese proverb “It is better to light a candle then to curse the darkness”, each artist created an original piece of art which was reproduced onto glass candle votives. The original artwork was exhibited and the candle votives were available for a $5 donation to selected charities that tackle world issues such as education, environment, medical needs, and those suffering from war, poverty, hunger, and oppression.

The reception was purposely held during the holiday season. The candles were intended to serve as a reminder of how little it takes to make a difference and contribute to a better world. Candles were available for a $5 donation. Examples of how the candles made a difference:

  • 1 candle provides 20 meals in a homeless shelter in Philadelphia
  • 1 candle supplies one book for a literacy program in Philadelphia
  • 2 candles plant a tree in Scottland
  • 3 candles provide one hygiene kit (soap, towels, toothbrushes/toothpaste) for one displaced family in Sudan
  • 5 candles provide up to one month of medication and appropriate medical supports to a special needs child in Costa Rica
